Your house might not have the most energy efficient home design but if you know how to install door weatherstripping then you can certainly help save energy.
Sealing gaps around windows and doors cuts down on drafts in cold months and keep air-conditioned air in the house during hot summer days. You can find ready made draft stoppers at your local hardware store but making your own out of heavy plastic sheeting or an old pair of jeans is just as easy and probably more fun.
This under-door weatherstripping activity shows you how to install door weatherstripping to make yours a unique energy efficiency home. Do this activity with your parent.
What You Need
- A heavy plastic sheeting or an old pair of jeans
- A large pair of scissors or a craft knife
- Thumb tacks
What to Do
- Cut a strip of the plastic sheeting or jeans to fit the length of the door and about 3” high.
- Snip them up in 1″ increments so they will bend and sweep more easily when the door opens.
- Have your parents help you thumb tack them to the door bottom or nail them under a piece wood stripping painted to match the door.
